Most passport and visa rules call for a plain white or off-white background. It gives clean, even contrast against your face, so scanners and photo checks read the image correctly. India's Passport Seva portal sets white as the default, and the rule carries into exam admit cards like UPSC, SSC, and banking forms. The USA, the UK, and most of Europe follow the same rule.
The size you need depends on your form. Choose 3.5 x 4.5 cm (35 x 45 mm) for India, Australia, Europe, the UK, or Pakistan. Choose 2 x 2 inch (51 x 51 mm) for the USA or the Philippines. Choose 3.5 x 5 cm (35 x 50 mm) for Malaysia. Each preset defaults to 300 DPI. Need a different size? Switch to custom and enter cm, mm, inch, or pixels.
Not every form wants white. If yours calls for a different shade, the passport photo tool sets any color you pick, and two shades already have their own pages: blue background passport photos and red background passport photos.
